Carmel Caterpillars Pre-School
Head Lice Policy
Policy Statement
We understand that this is a delicate subject and we are sympathetic to this. Please check your child's hair regularly. This can be done easily and effectively after every shampoo, using conditioner and a nit comb. If you suspect head lice are present please treat your child and other members of the family. Please do not bring your child in to Pre-School until you are sure they are clear, to avoid the spread of the lice.
Procedures
- If head lice are discovered while your child is at Pre-School we will contact the parent/carer and ask for the child to be collected.
- Please treat the hair, checking all lice are dead and the nits (the eggs that stay on the hair shafts) are removed. This can be done by using finger nails.
- Once you are confident the treatment has been successful the child is able to come back to Pre-School.
If you find head lice in your child's hair please inform/contact the Manager so we can inform other parents to be vigilant.
What to do if you discover your child has head lice
- If your child is scratching, please inspect the roots of the hair, paying particular attention to the back and around the ears.
- If you find any lice, keep your child away from Pre-School and inform the Manager.
- Ask at the chemist/pharmacy for a recommended treatment for removing the head lice. Please treat all the family at the same time.
- After treatment you will have to spend some time removing the dead eggs (normally white in colour ), and continue this for a few days. Repeat the treatment seven days later if any live eggs (normally brown in colour ) remain.
- Clean all brushes and combs that have been used thoroughly.
